THE TALE OF THE MONSTER FISH SANDWICH
Every morning off the coast in the Chesapeake Bay, you would find a single boat with an elderly man named Zack. Zack has traveled all over the globe, from the Bering Strait to the reefs of Australia, but Zack loved fishing in the Chesapeake Bay in the hopes of catching the one, The Monster. He wanted to be the one that caught the fish that has eluded many fishermen throughout the years. He’s heard all the stories of how The Monster would pull boats out into the Atlantic or capsize trawlers just to get away.
Many fishermen have said The Monster is a myth, while others claim the large fish nearly cost them their lives. Well Zack was determined and would be on the water from sun up to sun down. He would have a least a dozen poles ready and buckets of bait.
Then one day it happened. One pole bent clear into the water and didn’t spring back up. He knew this was it. Zack was excited and nervous. He grabbed the pole and set up for the long fight. He wasn’t going home empty handed. As he gripped the pole and reeled in the line, he never imagined the size of The Monster or how much it would take to bring him in.
For three days Zack struggled to reel in The Monster. He suffered hunger pains and the sun beating down on him, but he was not going to give up. It took all his strength and determination. Finally when he was able to reel The Monster up enough to see the size of the fish, he realized he didn’t have a boat large enough and would have to tow it to shore.
Zack set up the pole and made his way in. The docks were full with people and their takes from the Bay. Everyone looked on with envy as Zack docked his little boat. The Monster had finally been caught. As they all surrounded and congratulated him, Zack felt proud. It took 17 people to lift that elusive fish.
As Zack stood on the dock, he pondered to himself…”now that I’ve caught him, what do I do with him?” The Monster was a fitting nickname for the fish. Zack realized he would have enough fish for the remainder of his life and never have to fish again. After weeks of eating fish sandwiches, Zack decided to sell them to people on the docks. He started small, but then people from all around would come to get a taste of The Monster sandwich.
To keep his legacy alive, he shared the recipe of the The Monster sandwich with a local family in Lee Hall, Virginia. They have since opened The Fish Tale where you can purchase a taste of his triumphs and perseverance of catching the elusive Monster
